We have led our industry for over a decade and worked at the frontier of applying machine learning to investment management, becoming a multibillion-dollar asset manager with ambitious goals for the future. Your colleagues will include internationally recognized experts in machine learning research and highly experienced technology and finance professionals. Our team comes from diverse backgrounds, including concert music performance, humanitarian aid, opera singing, sports writing, and BMX racing, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone loves to succeed together.

In addition to an enriching and collegial working environment, we offer:

  • Highly competitive compensation and benefits packages

  • A beautiful modern office with daily catered lunches

Founded in 2007 by two leading scientists, Voleon supports a culture of curiosity and creativity. We do not silo our teams, allowing for a healthy work-life balance while tackling complex problems together. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will play a key role in harvesting insights from a complex array of data and mentoring the efforts of more junior Data Scientists. Your responsibilities will include designing systems, directing technical efforts in data curation, analysis, interpretation, and visualization, as well as effectively communicating findings to research staff and executive leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Technical Product Owners to prioritize high-level needs and autonomously implement details around analytics and insight extraction.
  • Identify and investigate abnormal production behavior, guiding other Data Scientists as necessary.
  • Communicate investigation results clearly to stakeholders, highlighting actionable insights.
  • Design and oversee analysis pipelines for ongoing monitoring and automation of valuable analyses.
  • Guide and manage the technical efforts of other Data Scientists.
  • Cultivate financial and statistical analysis expertise within the team for actionable insights into production trading and research systems.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of applied end-to-end industry experience with complex datasets (curation, querying, aggregation, exploratory data analysis, visualization).
  • Experience using statistical methods for data analysis, identifying patterns, conducting root cause analysis, and providing recommendations.
  • Ability to frame and quantitatively answer questions and derive forward-looking directions from retrospective analysis.
  • Fluency in managing and visualizing tabular data using SQL, Pandas, and R.
  • Basic software development tooling skills (bash, Unix, and git).
  • Strong communication skills to refine requirements and produce excellent reports.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in quantitative disciplines (statistics, biostatistics, data science, computer science, or a related field).

Preferred:

  • Experience leading technical contributors' efforts.
  • Prior industry experience or interest in finance (academic projects, coursework, or internships).
  • Experience in a production-facing environment, familiar with CI/CD, git, and Airflow.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this position is $190,000 to $230,000, influenced by factors like education, experience, skills, and geography. The base salary does not include other compensation forms like bonuses and benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and AD&D insurance, 20 days of PTO, nine sick days, and a 401(k) plan with a company match.
