Senior Data Engineer

Do you love the Bible and also enjoy writing code and processing data? This role may be for you! The YouVersion Senior Data Engineer will be responsible for providing data engineering support and delivery across all product lanes. This position requires expertise in data engineering, architecture, governance, quality, and testing. The individual will understand the big picture of YouVersion data while being able to design and deliver at the technical level. This role is critical for increasing engagement and growth through the Bible App globally. The Senior Data Engineer will collaborate closely with the Data Analytics team, Software Engineering team, and Product teams to define and deliver quality data that helps fulfill the YouVersion mission: “to encourage and challenge people to seek intimacy with God daily.” YouVersion, created by the local church in 2007, is a ministry of Life.Church, which aims to lead people to become fully devoted followers of Christ.

What You'll Do:

• Drive data awareness and provide accurate, actionable data for analytics and decision-making.
• Design and deliver complex data pipelines that are reliable and scalable, supporting and refining existing ETL processes and data interfaces.
• Collaborate with data and product teams to prioritize and shape data solutions for delivery.
• Provide documentation and diagramming for clarity among engineers and leaders.
• Develop data catalogs and definitions for understanding and usage.
• Gain expert knowledge of the data infrastructure, tools, and processes while assisting internal teams in defining data governance, privacy, and security.
• Continuously learn tools, technologies, and best practices in data engineering and develop testing and monitoring for trusted quality data results.
• Lead, mentor, and develop other data engineers while supporting user events processing to enhance data knowledge.
• Actively contribute within our agile development process, managing projects with minimal direction and meeting organizational needs.

Skills Needed to Succeed:

• Strong knowledge of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) including BigQuery, Dataflow, and DataStream or similar cloud platforms.
• Proficient in SQL and skilled in writing complex queries and performance tuning.
• High proficiency in Python, Go, Java, or other programming languages.
• Experienced with data orchestration/transformation tools such as Airflow, Pub/Sub, FiveTran, and DBT.
• Proficient in Database Management Systems, including Postgres, BigQuery, or SQL Server, and understanding user event data collection products such as Firebase and GA4.
• Preferred familiarity with JIRA, Gitlab, Amplitude, Backstage, Notion, and LucidChart.
• Experience in data warehousing modeling and design fundamentals.
• Exceptional time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines while being adaptable.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to explain complex processes clearly.
• Strong knowledge of analytics tools like Tableau is a bonus.
• Bachelor's Degree and/or Advanced Certification.
• 5+ years of data and engineering-related work experience.
