We are looking for an experienced Machine Learning Engineer for a contract role at Genentech in South San Francisco, CA. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in computational sciences and drug discovery.

The Team
At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED), we have initiated a journey to enhance our computational talent and capabilities by forming a new organization, gRED Computational Sciences (gCS). Our mission is to leverage data, technology, and computational approaches to revolutionize the discovery and development of therapeutics, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients worldwide. We are at the beginning of this exciting journey.

What You Will Do
As a Machine Learning Engineer, you will:

  • Develop and deploy machine learning models in production environments, ensuring solutions are scalable and reliable.
  • Tackle core research engineering challenges including algorithm design, implementation, and scaling.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including research scientists, computational biologists, and data engineers to address complex problems.
  • Build solutions that enable stakeholders to interact with and analyze multimodal datasets.

Who You Are

  • Educational Background: B.S. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field (Graduate degree preferred).
  • Experience: 4+ years of experience developing and applying ML models in an industry setting.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in Python and experience with Weights and Biases.
    • Familiarity with MLOps workflows (code version control, high-performance compute infrastructures, and experiment monitoring).
    • Extensive experience with ML frameworks and libraries (e.g., JAX, PyTorch, TensorFlow).
    • Strong background in statistics, probabilistic modeling, and data analysis.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts to various audiences.
    • Experience collaborating with external scientific partners, including academic and industry groups.
    • A passion for solving complex technical problems and a commitment to staying updated with the latest developments in machine learning.

Additional Information
gRED Computational Sciences is seeking a seasoned ML engineer experienced in Research and Development. You will work on high-profile initiatives and interact with data scientists and key leaders. We are open to considering candidates at various experience levels.

Work Schedule
Preference for on-site work in South San Francisco at least three days a week. Standard work hours are from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Compensation & Benefits
Pay Rate: Open (market rate based on experience). Benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, and 401K (provided minimum eligibility hours are met).

Work Authorization: Green Card or US Citizen preferred. No travel required.
