Lead Data Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to join our team at Ahold Delhaize USA, part of a global food retailer and U.S. family of brands, including Food Lion, Giant Food, The GIANT Company, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop. This professional will be responsible for expanding and optimizing our data and data pipeline architecture, driving our data initiatives, and ensuring optimal data delivery throughout ongoing projects.

Primary Purpose:

The Lead Data Engineer will engage in the entire lifecycle of a project, including data mapping, pipelines, modeling, and consumption. This role requires self-direction and the ability to support the data needs of multiple teams, systems, and products while optimizing or assisting in the design of our data architecture.

We offer a flexible/hybrid work schedule, which includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days. Our core office locations include Salisbury, NC; Chicago, IL; Quincy, MA; Carlisle, PA; Scarborough, ME; Hyattsville, MD; and Mauldin, SC. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Solving complex application errors and resolving application problems while following up with customers and IT personnel.
• Validating QA test plans and supporting the QA team during test execution.
• Designing and developing data transformations, data pipelines, and BI datasets for reports and dashboards to support decision-making.
• Ensuring adherence to change control and management procedures, creating requirement documents, and reviewing functional designs.
• Conducting detailed unit testing, data lineage impacts, and data analysis (SQL, Excel, Data Discovery) on legacy systems and new data sources.
• Creating and approving source to target data mappings for data pipelines and integration activities.
• Establishing data governance policies to ensure quality, security, and compliance while leading workstreams to improve business processes.
• Acting as a subject matter expert and mentoring junior engineers, while consistently delivering high-quality work in cross-functional environments.
• Remaining up to date on emerging technologies and recommending new approaches for improving data infrastructure.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a Technical field, alongside a Master's Degree in Technology and/or Business. Equivalent training/certifications/experience will also be considered.
• 8+ years of experience in a relevant field or technology, with 2+ years in an advanced role leading teams.
• 2+ years of experience in guiding, training, or onboarding team members in relevant technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Post-graduate degree or advanced training/certifications in relevant fields.
• 3+ years of experience in Agile teams and a Product/Platform-based operating model.
• Experience in leading teams or advancing technical capabilities within teams.
• Experience in the retail or grocery sector is preferred.
