Lead Data Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to join our team at Ahold Delhaize USA, part of a global food retailer with several leading omnichannel grocery brands. This role involves expanding and optimizing our data architecture and data pipeline, as well as ensuring optimal data flow and collection for cross-functional teams.

Primary Purpose: The Lead Data Engineer will drive our data initiatives, engaging in the full project lifecycle from data mapping to data consumption. This self-directed professional will support the data needs of multiple teams and help design data architecture for our next generation of products and initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Resolve complex application errors and design application solutions, ensuring timely follow-up with customers and IT personnel.
• Validate QA test plans and support the QA team during test execution.
• Design and develop data transformations, data pipelines, and BI datasets for reports and dashboards.
• Create requirement documents and functional design documents, reviewing those created by vendor partners.
• Document all work phases, including requirements gathering, relationship diagrams, database diagrams, and technical specifications.
• Conduct unit testing on ELT and report development, data lineage, and impact analysis.
• Perform data analysis on legacy systems and new data sources, documenting reporting requirements through engagement with business process SMEs.
• Create and approve source to target data mappings for integration activities.
• Identify and resolve impacts of proposed application development/enhancements.
• Work with business users to implement business intelligence solutions in the Data & Analytics Platform.
• Assess alternative software solutions for workability and technical feasibility.
• Implement and maintain data governance policies to ensure data quality, security, and compliance.
• Lead workstreams to improve team processes and eliminate technical debt.
• Coach and mentor junior engineers, modeling accountability and continuous development.
• Stay updated on emerging technologies and recommend improvements for data infrastructure.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; a Master's Degree in Technology and/or Business is preferred.
• 8+ years of relevant technology experience.
• 2+ years in an advanced role, leading teams directly or indirectly.
• 2+ years of experience in guiding, training, or onboarding team members in relevant technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Postgraduate degree, advanced training, or certifications in relevant fields preferred.
• 3+ years of experience in Agile teams and Product/Platform-based operating models.
• Experience leading teams and advancing technical capabilities.
• Experience in retail or grocery is a plus.

Our flexible hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days. Our core office locations include Salisbury, NC, Chicago, IL, Quincy, MA, Carlisle, PA, Scarborough, ME, Hyattsville, MD, and Mauldin, SC. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
