SMX is seeking a creative technical Data Scientist who can design and develop solutions to support the USINDOPACOM J6 portfolio of programs. We are looking for someone with hands-on experience in data science skills and technologies, who will collaborate closely with other data analytics professionals to produce innovative solutions involving data pipelines, data models, and data visualizations. This position is onsite at Camp H.M. Smith Marine Corps Base in Hawaii and requires a DoD security clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI, which requires US citizenship.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and improve ML models by applying a firm understanding of the math underlying model training and prediction.
  • Formulate and complete end-to-end projects encompassing data gathering, analysis, modeling, and ongoing scaled deliverables and presentations.
  • Structure and preprocess datasets to extract usable information and prepare for modeling.
  • Review and collaborate on recommendations and designs with other subject matter experts.
  • Take ownership of solutions, assignments, action items, and issues while maintaining accountability for their completion.
  • Maintain solutions as business requirements evolve and upstream system changes are implemented.
  • Produce high-quality, well-written technical documentation and work effectively within a delivery-centric professional services team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to understand their business needs and provide transparent and regular status updates.
  • Navigate a fast-paced Agile environment with fluid requirements and changing priorities.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance.
  • BA/BS or MA/MS degree in a quantitative field with a strong emphasis on quantitative coursework (e.g., Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics).
  • Hands-on experience with development and implementation of ML models.
  • Firm understanding of linear regression and regression/classification trees, along with basic math/statistics fluency.
  • Experience with a general-purpose programming language (e.g., Python) and techniques to avoid overfitting ML models.
  • Skilled in data manipulation and analysis, with excellent collaboration skills.
  • Experience with AWS/Apache Airflow/Git is a plus.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with development and implementation of ML models.
  • Ability to complete tasks within required timeframes with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in SharePoint, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Visio, and Project.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused mindset.
  • Capacity to learn new systems rapidly and adapt quickly to change.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Experience with USINDOPACOM.
  • Intra-agency or joint command experience.

The proposed salary for this position is $122,500—$183,700 USD.
