Position Details:

  • Location: Kennewick, WA (Hybrid work schedule)
  • Sponsorship: Benton PUD does not sponsor H1-B Visas or H1-B Visa Transfers.
  • Salary Range:
    - Data Engineer II: $91,442 to $130,632 Annually (Hiring Target Range $91,442 to $108,860)
    - Data Engineer III: $110,646 to $158,065 Annually (Hiring Target Range $110,646 to $131,721)

Position Purpose/Summary:

The primary purpose is to create optimized data flows using current and future data architecture to deliver data solutions and visualizations. The Data Engineer will collaborate with the Manager of Data & Analytics, fellow Data Engineers, BI Analysts, and department data champions to meet data needs and fulfill use case requirements for visualizations. Responsibilities include designing, building, and maintaining data engineering workflows that efficiently move and transform data into data marts within our Data Warehouse, contributing to the development of data architecture and standards.

Accountabilities:

  • Data Flow Creation: Source data from multiple disparate sources using Python, SQL, and APIs, working with structured and semi-structured data formats (e.g., JSON, XML).
  • Data Tools Utilization: Support design solutions through data profiling, mining, and management of enterprise data analytics architecture.
  • Database Administration: Perform necessary tasks for maintaining the district's database environments and BI platform, including designing and deploying data visualization solutions.
  • Error Handling: Implement reliable error/exception handling and rollback mechanisms; conduct unit testing, system integration testing, and assist with user acceptance testing.
  • Data Integrity: Develop robust data workflows, enforce data standards, and create data documentation.
  • Collaboration: Work with various teams by leading or supporting data movement processes across all areas of district business.
  • Special Projects: Complete ad-hoc projects and other duties as assigned to meet team, department, and organization goals.

Additional Accountabilities for Data Engineer III:

  • Lead data flow creation and solution design, guiding and mentoring colleagues in data movement processes.

Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Certifications:

  • Data Engineer I:
    - Education: BA/BS in Computer Science or related area
    - Experience: 3-4 years with working knowledge of databases (preferred SQL Server) and programming (ETL development, object-oriented programming, web services, SQL).
  • Data Engineer II:
    - Education: BA/BS in Computer Science or related area
    - Experience: 5-7 years with working knowledge of databases and programming.
  • Education Substitution: A BA/BS is preferred, but substitution is allowed with job-related certifications and at least an AA degree, coupled with two additional years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recognized certificates in programming languages.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced skills in Python, SQL, object-oriented programming, or data engineering.
  • Experience with SQL Server and basic database administration tasks.
  • Understanding of Data Marts and Data Warehouse technologies.
  • Proficiency in using web services and APIs for data integration (JSON, XML, REST, SOAP).
  • Experience utilizing orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow.
  • Ability to write complex SQL for analytics and maintain data integrity, including documentation and testing experience.
  • Collaborative problem-solving and debugging skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
